Soil-pipe interaction during large lateral movements: SAFEBUCK II JIP

Development of a force-resultant plasticity model to simulate the response of the soil to large lateral displacements. Performed in conjunction with Dr Chris Martin (Oxford University) the work involved numerical analyses to determine the shape of the yield surface for various burial depths, pipe weights and soil characteristics. Berm geometry changes as lateral displacement occured was based on centrifuge model tests. This enabled small strain FLAC analyses to be used at each stage of deformation. The model was coded into an Abaqus user element and tested for comparison with laboratory tests.
